"Kicks," written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, was Paul Revere & the Raiders' second top 20 hit rising to no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). "Kicks" seems to be the first anti-drug rock song; Mann and Weil said that they originally wrote it hoping it would help a friend who was struggling with drugs (songfests, 2023). The song was first offered to the Animals, who turned it down. The Raiders' version was ranked no. 400 on the Rolling Stone's “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” and no. 36 on Paste Magazine’s “50 Greatest Garage Rock Songs” (genius, 2023).
