Dostoevsky and Irwin Weil

On August 2, 2023 we had the honor of meeting Professor Irwin Weil in Chicago Illinois to talk more about Artificial Hearts, Dostoevsky and classics of World Literature. Check out the amazing conversation we had with him on Dostoevsky and Russian Literature.

Professor Irwin Weil was born in 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his AB and MA from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D from Harvard University. He has been teaching for over 70 years at Several American Universities, including Harvard University, Brandeis University, the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, as well as the Moscow Humanities University. Among his achievements is being placed in the top 1 percent of professors in the United States by the Teaching Company and receiving several teaching awards, including the Northwestern University College of Arts and Sciences Award for distinguished teaching, the University Alumni Award for excellence in teaching and the Gold Pushkin Medal from the International Association of Teachers of Russian and Russian literature for outstanding teaching and research. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the prestigious St. Petersburg Nevsky Institute for the Humanities. Professor Weil is also a talented actor having worked in his youth in the professional theatre business both on and off Broadway, together with the renowned German director, Erwin Piscator, who first put Berthed Brecht on the Berlin Stage. Professor Weil’s courses included many works by Dostoevsky, including his favorite, “The Brothers Karamazov.” He was able to communicate his delight in these works to many generations of American and Russian students. He still hears from many of them, and he delights in their works.
