What is to be Done?: Level 3 - Russian-to-English
I believe the beauty of this channel is that the content is from real-world language. It is language that was written or spoken NOT for the purposes of language learning. This provides authentic context. A dictionary provides words. A grammar book provides rules. Real-world content provides words, rules, and CONTEXT. I believe context is just as important as the words and rules.
Without context, language acquisition is not happening in the long-term language centers of the brain. Without context, language learning has no flavor. Without flavor, your brain won’t remember it except through the forced arduous efforts of memorization. I say NO to that.
1. **Listening and Reading Simultaneously:**
A) Begin by listening to Level 1 content where the segments are played in your native language first. Follow along with the parallel text. This helps you associate the spoken words with their counterparts. The text will help you clear up any ambiguities in what you’re hearing.
B) Swap the direction and listen to the target language segments first, followed by your native language. Attempt to translate the segments as you go along.
C) Listen, listen listen, and listen some more.
OBJECTIVE: Listen. You will want to listen to the point where you can reasonably predict the main words of the counterpart segment, if not word-for-word. Remember to acquire this capability in both directions (English-to-Russian and Russian-to-English).
--- You’ll know you’re there when you can comprehend every word of a segment.
2. **Repeat and Imitate:**
A) Replay the audio segment multiple times, focusing on pronunciation and intonation. Pause and repeat after the speaker to practice mimicking the target sounds accurately. Compare your pronunciation with the native speaker's.
B) While going about your day, try to recall words and phrases and their counterparts in both directions.
C) Adapt words and phrases to your own sentences. Take words or chunks of words and create your own sentences. Write them out, speak them. Ask for feedback in the comments section.
OBJECTIVE: Speak. It is important to practice speaking deliberately. Without minimizing that point, what you want to see happen here is organic speaking that “wells up” from within you. If you listen often enough, you’ll notice words and phrases from the content (in either language) begin to spontaneously pop up in your mind. At these times, you want to speak those words and phrases in your target language.
--- You’ll know you’re there when these words and phrases do not spring forth from memorization, but from a feeling, or an urge, to speak them. If you listen often enough, speaking will be a natural byproduct. Speak when you can’t help it!
3. **Progress Up the Levels:**
A) Repeat this process with progressively more complex texts (move up to Level 2, Level 3, and target language only) as your language skills improve.
OBJECTIVE: 100% Comprehension. Here you want to progress through the levels and ultimately comprehend the composition in your target language only (Russian-only or English-only).
--- You’ll know you’re there when you can comprehend the entire text and mentally see many of the words on the screen.
NOTE: Level 3 is provided for much of the content. However, you might find it unnecessary as the segments are so large. If so, just skip it. Progress through Level 1 to Level 2, and then skip to target language only. If you find Level 3 useful, please use it as you desire!
4. **Grammar:**
A) Have a good grammar book on hand and study it regularly.
B) As you progress through a text, go through each word and segment and identify each grammar rule at play. Research concepts you don’t understand.
C) Ask questions in the comments section.
OBJECTIVE: Seek to be a grammar expert.
SUMMARY
In a provincial town, a health commission inspects stores for cholera concerns. The absurdities unfold as they scrutinize soap, suspect strychnine in ham, and discover kittens in buckwheat. The day ends with exhausted officers and a comical attempt to destroy a tray of apples for fear of infection.
