China has issued new regulations to help Taiwan residents visit and live in the mainland.

The move, starting on Jan.1.2024, will shorten the time to process applications, and could incorporate Taiwan residents into the Chinese mainland’s public services.

The regulations respond to a years-long demand. In 1979, the Chinese mainland appealed to re-establish postal communication, business and sea navigation with Taiwan.

Progress has been made since, but more than four decades on, obstacles remain.

One success story lies in China’s southeastern Fujian Province, where direct ferry services run between Taiwan-administrated Kinmen and Mazu.
