In this video, we will learn about alcoholic preparations that are made by fermenting herbal juices or decoction with the addition of sugar in it. Asavas are made directly with fresh herbal juices while Arishtas are made with the herbal decoctions boiled in water. In Ayurveda, this process of making Asava Arishtas is called Sandhana Kalpana. These are considered the best formulations because they have superior keeping qualities, that is due to fermentation aids in preservation. The microorganisms that are involved in this process mediate the following: improved therapeutic properties, increased drug delivery within the body. Preservative qualities and drug potentization resulting from biotransformation mediated by native microbes are common characteristics of these products. The Asava and arishtas do not lose their potency with time; instead of this as they become older their potency will be increased.
