Paan is a popular Indian street food, often consumed after meals. It is made from betel leaves filled with a mixture of areca nut, tobacco, lime, spices, and occasionally sweetened condensed milk or gulkand (rose petal jam). The filled leaf is then folded into a triangle or a square shape and consumed whole or in bites.

Making Paan:

Ingredients:

- Betel leaves

- Areca nut

- Tobacco (optional)

- Lime paste

- Gulkand

- Sweetened condensed milk

- Spices like cardamom and clove

Steps:

1. Clean the betel leaves and pat them dry.

2. Apply a layer of lime paste on the inner side of the leaf.

3. Add a small amount of areca nut, tobacco (if using), and gulkand.

4. Drizzle a little sweetened condensed milk on top and sprinkle with spices.

5. Fold the leaf into a triangle or a square, ensuring all the fillings are enclosed within.

6. The paan is now ready to be served.

Benefits:

Paan is known for its digestive properties and is hence consumed after meals. It aids in digestion and also acts as a mouth freshener. The betel leaf itself is packed with vitamins like vitamin C, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, and carotene and is a great source of calcium. However, it should be noted that the addition of tobacco can be harmful to health.

As a street food, Paan is a part of the cultural heritage of many Asian countries, contributing to the local economy and tourist attraction. It’s a unique experience to watch the skill and speed with which street vendors assemble
