RC Driver's Training: Teaching My 6-Year-Old How To Trail Ride

It has been an amazing couple days for me. I really want my sons to enjoy the RC hobby as much as I do, so I bought my 6-year-old a Losi Mini Desert Truck for his birthday. It didn't succeed in pulling him away from his Lego interest enough to run it more than 3 times since his birthday at the end of March. I got him to take it out with me yesterday, but the small size makes steering very touchy and - while it's not super fast - it is too fast for him. Add to that, the low ground clearance allows it to get hung up to easily. Seeing his frustration, I asked him if he wasn't to drive my SCX10. I chose that truck to ride with him because it isn't too fast. While his Losi is too fast for him to handle, he wants it to go as fast as my big Losi if I have that out at the same time, so I learned to drive slowly so he wouldn't compare his to it.

So he took my controller for the SCX10 (which is the scariest part for me, because I worry about him dropping my DX4R Pro) and started driving like a champ! With his Losi, he kept doing circles because he was comfortable that he wouldn't lose control. The slow speed of the SCX10 made him feel comfortable enough controlling the truck to take it all over the yard. We played on a dirt pile that is left over from a recent yard project and he had a blast. Later, he asked me if we could go out and RC? Of course I said yes! Before I knew it, his 4-year-old brother had the RC10 in the driveway and was asking where the controller was for it. I stayed with him and helped him control the RC10 (because he wanted it to go fast, but doesn't know how to turn it) and my older son, Dino, took the SCX10 and drove it around back to the dirt pile. By the way, HE LOVES THE WINCH!

We went out 2 more times after that. It's been a lot of fun, but now I need to find a cheaper transmitter that can control the winch, so I don't have to worry about the DX4R Pro!
