Holmes was a con artist, a thief, and a murderer who built a three-story "Murder Castle" in Chicago during the 1893 World's Fair. The castle was equipped with trapdoors, gas chambers, and a basement crematorium, and it is believed that Holmes killed as many as 200 people there.
