Removing Varnish from a wonderful 17th Century portrait

This week I have started in earnest on a lovely 17th Century Portrait attributed to the artist John Ryley. The varnish you see removing here is very yellowed and was probably added when the last lot of restoration work was done …there is lots of historical retouching on this one which I will share as things progress.

A tradition Dammar recipe is the tree resin mixed with turpentine , it does yellow over time though , other agents can be added to slow this process , some believe that only a dammar varnish can bring out the true tones within an oil painting …
