Courage and Sacrifice

So, before we tell you the point of this harrowing incident, allow us to explain, first, what it really is NOT about.
You are about to encounter a heartbreaking story of interracial confrontation in the streets. True. And it does describe a senseless crime with outnumbered victims and vicious perpetrators.
But the story of the unnecessary, premature death of Jonathan Lewis in a Las Vegas hospital Intensive Care Unit is not intended to promote racial division. Above all, it is a tribute to human courage and self-sacrifice.
By speculating, we may attempt to excuse the truly inexcusable behavior of those 15 black youths who reportedly stole the belongings of a smaller white student outside Rancho High School. Today’s “woke” media might demand that justification.
We might try and understand the cultural or economic disadvantages, or the racial injustice that drove that sadistic mob to throw such a young child into the trash can after stripping him of his goods.
And we could easily understand if that victim’s older, Caucasian protector had ignored the incident and let it slide entirely. After all, the odds were against him…15 to one. But that is not what young Jonathan Lewis chose to do.
The battle was noble…but lost before it began. Jonathan stood up for the rights of his younger friend, demanding the return of the pilfered goods. And it cost him his life.
Las Vegas police answered a battery call outside the high school on November first. The badly beaten, bleeding body of Jonathan Lewis was transported from the scene of the crime to a local hospital, where his mother made the call and took him off life-support just a few days later.
Jonathan’s story is a reminder to us all that there is a price to pay when you stand up for what is right. It cost Jonathan Lewis his life. But until one finds a reason to give up your life, is there any real purpose in living it?
“Greater love hath no man than that he would lay down his life for a friend.”
