Mayor's Holiday Festival In Overland Park, Kansas - Friday, November 17th, 2023

A video of the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in downtown Overland Park, Kansas. Now they are calling it the Mayor's Holiday Festival. We arrived a bit too late to the see mayor flip the switch to the Christmas tree. They now have the Christmas tree in Thompson Park, instead of at the Clock Tower. As you can see, the new tree is GIANT in size - about 4 to 5 stories tall! One has to wonder how much they paid for this fake tree. But you have to admit, it is impressive. We were able to enjoy some apple cider and cookies, but unfortunately all the hot cocoa was already gone. They had kids crafts, pony rides, train rides and a snow globe bouncy house for the kids.
There was a big line in Thompson Park for the kids to meet Santa Claus. The group "Twice On Sunday" was performing on the Paper Airplane stage. Kids filled the playground area, which was dark with hardly any lighting, since kids usually don't play there after dark. Over at Strang Hall, they had a five person symphony "Happy Wanderers" playing Christmas music throughout the night. and a few crafts booths at the Maker's Market there in Strang Hall's parking lot.
It turned out to be a very nice evening for the event, temperatures in the low 50°s. The event started at 5:00 PM and ran to 8:00 PM. We toured thru Overland Park Historical Society in their newly acquired building at corner of 80th and Sante Fe. Over by the Clock Tower they had hay rides going on through the night, while serving snacks and hot cocoa in the small park there. Christmas Carolers walked around while singing all night, and a roaming Grinch was on hand as well. Merry Christmas everyone!
