Israel’s WMD Moment: The Al Shifa Hospital Raid and the Missing Hamas HQ

The decision to raid the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza has wrought international condemnation upon the Israeli government. Netanyahu's officials claimed the hospital sat upon a "vast underground city" and "Hamas command center," but has so far only produced a few AK-47s, bullet proof vests, and grenades; with no independent verification on how they got there in the first place.

Remember in the run up to the Iraq War in 2003, the US was making similar grand claims about Saddam Hussein's supposed WMD program that included the memorable "yellow cake" and "aluminum tubes" stories. Many of those came from a source called "Curveball" who turned out to be an Iraqi exile willing to tell the US whatever it wanted to hear in order to justify its own disastrous foreign policy direction.

Unless the IDF produces significant evidence of Hamas facilities in the coming days the world won't remember a few AKs in an MRI machine, but it certainly won't forget premature babies strewn out on a stretcher in a hospital corridor.

While Israel has a right to defend itself from the perpetrators of the October 7 terrorist atrocities, it does not have a right to collectively punish an entire population.
