A pro-Palestinian protester, Loay Abdelfattah Alnaji, who is held on a $1 million bond in connection with the death of pro-Israel protester Paul Kessler, will only face hate crime charges if investigators can establish that the blow leading to the Jewish man’s fall was accompanied by hate speech.

Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko stated in a press conference on Friday that the Sheriff’s Department had conducted an extensive investigation, interviewing 60 witnesses, reviewing over 600 videos, and investing 2,000 work hours into the case.

“We have not ruled out a hate crime – an investigation into an alleged hate crime is ongoing,” Nasarenko said Friday. “We are looking for whether the act was accompanied by hate speech, specific words . . . that show hatred toward a specific group. We don’t have that at the moment.”

Nasarenko mentioned that the DA’s office became involved within 24 hours of Kessler’s death on November 6, which occurred after the 69-year-old was struck by Alnaji during a dispute at opposing pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests at the intersection of Westlake and Thousand Oaks Boulevards in Westlake Village around 3:20 p.m. on November 5.

The impact sent Kessler tumbling onto the concrete, as described by witnesses to Fox News Digital, while holding a megaphone, Fox News reported.
