Fred M'membe, president of Zambia's Socialist Party, has been arrested on espionage charges. According to Zambia police, M'membe unlawfully passed on information to a foreign power. The charges relate to his appearance in a Zimbabwean state broadcaster's political documentary, in which M'membe accused Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema of being a Western stooge.

However, M'membe an avowed socialist and Pan-Africanist, says the charges are the Zambian government's attempt to silence him for speaking out against the neo-liberal policies it is implementing at the behest of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
