Gen Z Wants Less Sexual Relationships In TV And Movies
#tv #movies
A survey done at the UCLA called Teens and Screens conducted by the Center For Scholars and Storytellers shows that the newer generation of viewers now prefer to watch TV shows and movies that feature more friendship scenes than sexual relationships put in media.
The group surveyed were from the ages 10 to 24.
Kids 10 to 12 were not asked about sexual scenes and romance.
The kids preferred to see more friendships; some that they can actually relate to.
They hated forced romantic relationships/sexual relationships, especially the ones that are toxic, and would rather watch friendship stories where people group supporting each other.
Maya Hawke who plays the role of Robin in the Netflix hit TV show Stranger Things, was tired of her character talked into having a girlfriend in the show, when she prefers Robin to have more friendships. She also said that friendship scenes should get more airtime.
Kids also didn't like the pairings of couples that didn't match, and had on-and-off relationships.
The study shows that people, rated it 4/10, disliked these parts in shows and movies, the fact that male and female leads always have to fall in love, or there's a love triangle involved.
Another thing mentioned that racial stereotypes should be avoided.
Incidents such as people of different backgrounds having to play the villain, or characterized as bad people.
Also having unrealistic storylines that these characters always have to achieve this to make it in the end, was the 2nd hated part.
Regarding Marvel movies, 56% of reviewers said that they would rather watch an original movie or binge-watch a series than watch a remake of an original movie.
Some people prefer to watch shows that they can relate to the character.
Dr Yalta T Uls, founder and director of CSS, co-author of the study, and a psychology professor at the UCLA, explains that people want to see more different kinds of relationships in media.
Some people experience loneliness, so they watch these shows and movies to feel connected.
Yalta Uls also says while some creators put sex and romance in their media for character connection, Hollywood should reckon the need for more friendships in shows and movies that viewers can enjoy and feel comfortable with.
While the Asian media industry, such as Korean media, in shows, they don't shove a lot of romance scenes compared to USA made shows. Sex scenes are barely seen, and advertisements get sent way back to the end of the show.
Everything is Korean made, including support from Samsung, LG, and Korean businesses which get credited or blurred out if not sponsored.
Even the kid shows don't have romances, and focus on kids having friendships and have a fun storyline, unline current USA made kids shows that sneak in some political agenda.
USA has tried to make their own version of Korean made shows like The Good Doctor, but it's not good enough as the original.
The media industry in USA could learn from other countries instead of copying and altering their ideas.
