High School Students Sing A Capella Rendition Of Hallelujah

Leonard Cohen’s song ‘Hallelujah’ has been performed by a wide variety of singers, over 300, and in various languages, since 1991. Most of them came after the song was included in the animated motion picture Shrek ten years later. It is considered as the "baseline" of secular hymns, a type of non-religious popular song that has elements in common with religious music.

It has the perfect harmony to be performed in an a capella arrangement, as this group of students proves right. Just Singin’ is an a capella choir group from Vestavia Hills High School in Alabama. After a school concert, the gathered in a stairwell at the school and decided to throw an impromptu performance of Cohen’s song, according to an arrangement by the a capella group Pentatonix.

Pentatonix covered the song in the quintet's 2016 album, A Pentatonix Christmas. On October 21, 2016, Pentatonix also released a music video for its cover.

The song is about a love that has soured and gone stale. Cohen used a lot of religious imagery, including references to some of the more notorious women in the bible.

"Hallelujah" experienced renewed interest following Cohen's death in November 2016 and appeared on multiple international singles charts, including entering the American Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. (source: Various)
