Outlaw Johnny Black Review: Black Kungfu Western

Outlaw Johnny Black is a wanted man, and to evade capture, he assumes the persona of a preacher in a small town. Nevertheless, his past eventually catches up with him, and he administers justice in the only way he knows how.

Outlaw Johnny Black, portrayed by Michael Jai White, is the kung fu gunslinging cowboy on a quest for vengeance to avenge his father’s wrongful death. The story is a classic Western theme, a familiar narrative where an outlaw arrives in a new town only to discover that one of the influential figures in power is, in fact, a criminal aiming to monopolize all available resources. Even the blending of Western and Asian kung fu influences has been explored before. This production, lead by Michael Jai White, pays homage to the blaxploitation films of the past, a gesture that’s commendable.
