The former Labour home secretary Jacqui Smith stoodby University Hospitals Birmingham's former chiefexecutive despite official censure, a BBC investigation has revealed.

Medics told the year-long investigation thatwhistle-blowers were being punished by managementfor raising patient safety issues.

Many have questioned the actions of David Rosser,who was the trust's chief executive for much of the time in question.
