UN body to try for fifth time to pass resolution on conflict
The United Nations Security Council will try for a fifth time to agree a resolution on the Israel-Hamas war, with a vote due later today.

The draft resolution, if passed, would call for urgent and extended humanitarian pauses and corridors throughout Gaza for a sufficient number of days.

While the 15-member council, which has the responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, has been paralysed by internal division since the conflict began, some diplomats told Reuters news agency that they expected the resolution to pass.

A resolution needs at least nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the United States, Russia, China, France or Britain. Some countries may abstain.

The draft, obtained by the Associated Press, makes no mention of a ceasefire and doesn't refer to Hamas's 7 October attack that Israel says killed around 1,200 people and left 240 others hostage.

It also does not cite Israel's retaliatory airstrikes and ground offensive in Gaza that the Hamas-run health ministry says has killed more than 11,000 Palestinians, two-thirds of them women and children.

China and Russia have wanted an immediate ceasefire, while the US – Israel's closest ally – has called for humanitarian pauses but objects to any mention of a ceasefire.
