Techniques: Embossing (UPDATED)

Title: Rwanda (Work in Progress)

In this drawing I'm using embossing tools. The one you see in the video is a scriber that you would use to mark metal. I use it to create fine lines on the paper to create the illusion of hair and fur. Once I've sketched out my drawing. I always draw the eyes first then work outwards. When using an embossing tool it's important to work in good lighting conditions so that you can see the indents in the paper. I work on a small area at a time when using the embossing tool. I then use a gentle to moderate pressure to go over the indentation marks. Once I've completed the drawing I go over the whole thing using a battery eraser to further enhance lighter areas and a dark pencil to pick out the shaded areas.

It's important not to use too much pressure when shading so that you don't fill the indents.

When embossing don't draw all the marks in the same direction. Nature isn't perfect. Vary the direction of your marking so that it looks realistic.
