Shadow of the Vampire is a 2000 metafiction horror film directed by E. Elias Merhige, written by Steven Katz, and starring John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe.

It is a fictionalized account of the making of the classic 1922 Vampire film Nosferatu, directed by F. W. Murnau, during which the film crew begin to have disturbing suspicions about their lead actor.

While it is not necessary to watch Nosferatu before Shadow, I think viewers will enjoy it more. However, you will understand the story line even if you've never seen the 1922 movie, you can always watch it afterwards. Both are a must see, especially for Halloween. It's more of a dark comedy to me rather than a horror movie, since there are plenty of laughs, but I suppose given it's content, it falls into the horror category. Willem Dafoe is captivating as Count Orlok and John Malkovich is magnetic as always. Enjoy!
