Ohio Corrections Officer Trial, Excited Delirium Debate

CORRECTION: Montgomery County Chief Deputy Coroner Lee Lehman was mislabeled as OBI Special Agent towards the end of the video

Former Richland County, Ohio Corrections Officer Mark Cooper, is charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide, in the death of inmate Alex Rios. The cause of death was originally ruled accidental as a result of "excited delirium," which is not generally a recognized cause of death. The family filed suit to have the cause of death changed. An investigation was opened by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations and a Grand Jury indicted Cooper in December of 2022 with "recklessly causing the death" of Rios.

Many of you have mentioned a mock trial previously, especially last week when we watch Judge Wolfe in Dickson County host an amazing community mock trial. This is going to be step one in seeing if we can pull it off!

This trial has already concluded, but resulted in a hung jury. A Jury of Meg's Crime Watch Subscriber's has been selected, and will be watching this trial, and following normal court rules (no discussion, no media, etc.). At the end, they will deliberate, and those of you who have never sat on a jury, can see first hand, what a group of strangers with differing opinions and differing backgrounds come together to agree on a verdict.
