Are you looking to hire a CEO or other executive? If so, you might want to rethink your process.

Hiring a CEO is one of the most important things that a board or founder will do. It's also one of the hardest.

There are a lot of factors to consider, and the process is often opaque. Founders grade potential CEOs on a variety of dimensions, from their strategy chops to their fundraising abilities to their experience leading a team.

But one of the most important factors that is often overlooked is whether or not the CEO can actually deliver the outcomes that the company needs.

Too often, boards and founders ask generic questions in interviews, like "tell me about a time when you overcame a challenge" or "what are your thoughts on x industry trend?" These questions don't reveal whether or not the CEO can actually drive the outcomes that matter.

The solution is simple: define the outcomes that you want from the person and grade them against the outcomes that you're looking for. This will help you surface whether or not they have the ability to deliver results, as opposed to just asking them generic questions.

Too often, people hire CEO's or other executives and don't grade them on the outcomes that they want. They just ask them generic questions, which leads to horrible results and bad hires.

Terrible process leads to terrible hires.

It's time to start grading CEO's on the outcomes that matter.

Otherwise, we'll continue to see terrible hires that lead to disastrous results.
