Instant Gratification vs. Diligence

Instant gratification: the need to immediately fulfill an urge or desire; expecting so succed or win at something without investing the equivalent amount of time and effort.

Diligence: careful and persistent work or effort.

Instant gratification has twisted our society into one that fails constantly. We get overwhelmed by the distance we have to go from our starting point to our goals, and 85% of us will give up before we even give ourselves a chance to get started.

Good things take time and hardwork. You can’t expect to see sprouts out of your seed when you just planted it yesterday, and us humans are much like plants in that we take time to change, grow, and develop on every level.

The Bible and God advise that a wise person does not fall prey to the folly of instant gratification, but instead works diligently, consistently, and patiently in order to effect change and achieve your goals. Here are a few verses that talk about just that.

Proverbs 12:11-“Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.”

Proverbs 14:23-“All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”

Proverbs 24:33-34: “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—and poverty will comeon you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.”

I hope this inspires you to be diligent in the pursuit of your goals and to not give up today!
