The Republic of Turkey turns 100 on the 29 October.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, known as the 'Father ofTurkey', had envisaged a modern, secular nation-statewhen he founded it from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire.
With a history of military coups disrupting itsdemocracy, the country is now ruled by PresidentErdogan, a leader with ambitions to revive the Ottomaninfluence on the global stage.
