VETERANS DAY SPECIAL: THE HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY
I dug deep and found super rare audio of the final battle of WW1 when the guns went silent after the armistice (ceasefire) went into effect marking the end of the war and giving birth to what we call Veterans Day.
Brief history of Veterans Day
Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, marking the first anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1954, it evolved into Veterans Day, honoring all U.S. military veterans. The date pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in the armed forces.
The history of Veterans Day dates back to the aftermath of World War I. On November 11, 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany, effectively ending the fighting on the Western Front. The armistice took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
A year later, on November 11, 1919, the first Armistice Day was observed to commemorate the end of World War I. It primarily honored the veterans of that war and was marked with parades and ceremonies. In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized Armistice Day.
However, after World War II and the Korean War, it became evident that the world had seen additional large-scale military conflicts. In light of this, there was a push to make Armistice Day a day to honor all U.S. veterans, not just those of World War I.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill officially changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day. This shift broadened the scope of the holiday to honor American veterans of all wars. November 11th became a day to recognize and express gratitude for the service and sacrifice of military veterans throughout the nation's history.
Since then, Veterans Day has been observed annually on November 11th, with ceremonies, parades, and various activities across the United States to honor and thank all those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces
THANK A VETERAN AND GOD BLESS YOU AND GOD BLESS AMERICA
