The original plans for Darth Vader in The Force Awakens would have had canon-shattering consequences for the Star Wars franchise. Following his redemption in Return of the Jedi, Anakin Skywalker saved his son Luke by defeating the Emperor, finally bringing balance to the Force as the Chosen One even after his years of corruption as Vader. However, The Force Awakens nearly revealed that Anakin's redemption was not as complete as initially depicted in the final episode of the original trilogy.
