A toothache can happen for many reasons - cavities, infections, injuries, grinding teeth, etc. The pain can range from mild to severe and can sometimes radiate throughout the jaw, neck, ear or head.

While you should always see a dentist for a proper diagnosis, some natural and home remedies may help temporarily reduce toothache pain and discomfort while you wait for your appointment.

One of the most common natural remedies is clove oil. Cloves contain eugenol, a natural anesthetic that can numb pain receptors when applied directly to the affected area. Use a q-tip to rub a small amount of clove oil on the painful tooth and gum.

You may feel some relief within minutes as the area becomes numb. Just be careful not to swallow the oil.

Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water is another go-to home remedy. Salt helps reduce inflammation and prevent infection, while warm temperatures soothe nerves. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in warm water and rinse for 30 seconds. You can repeat as needed.

Placing a cold compress against your cheek near the painful tooth can minimize swelling and sensitivity. Ice cubes wrapped in a thin towel or a bag of frozen vegetables make good cold compresses. Hold for 10-15 minutes at a time.

For toothache pain that wakes you up at night, having some soothing tea before bedtime may help. Chamomile, sage, or green tea can reduce inflammation and promote relaxation. Sip some tea while doing deep breathing exercises to take your focus off the pain.

While natural remedies won't cure a toothache, they can provide temporary relief until you can see a dentist. You may get through a painful night with some simple ingredients from your kitchen.
