One of Britain’s most prolific thieves is finally in jail after robbing an 88-year-old disabled man in the street. The brazen robbery was carried out in broad daylight and captured on CCTV footage.

Andrew Merritt, a 34-year-old man with 118 previous convictions, has been labeled a ‘shameless thief’ after the crime, which took place in the northern English town of Worksop. Merritt asked the elderly man for £2, and the kind pensioner, who took out his wallet to help, gave him £3.10. CCTV footage captured Merritt hugging the man before snatching his wallet and walking away with a smile. He stole £1,100 ($1,350) and counted the money in front of his victim before dumping the wallet nearby.

Fortunately, witnesses came to the man’s aid, while cameras were able to identify the thief (despite a pathetic attempt at concealing his identity by changing his t-shirt, and just his t-shirt). Merritt was arrested while lounging around in bed, and denied the theft, saying that the elderly man was planning on buying his bicycle off him. He was sentenced to four years in prison and banned from Worksop town center for four years.
