Lethbridge Police are warning about a Grandparent scam which is making the rounds. The Grandparent or Emergency scam as it is often called involves fraudsters targeting seniors by calling and pretending to be a family member, usually a grandchild, claiming they are in trouble and need money immediately. The caller may also pretend to be a police officer or lawyer acting on the grandchild’s behalf. Police say the scammers may also seek payment in the form of gift cards, bitcoin or e-transfers. Sergeant Kevin Talbot with the LPS says there are ways you can protect yourself from becoming a victim. Sergeant Talbot says the best thing you can do is simply to just end the call with the scammer.
