On September 16, 2019 at approximately 2333 hours, 9th Mobile Division detectives observed a vehicle driving erratically in the area of Indian Trail and Poplar Level Road in the 6th Division. The detectives got behind the vehicle and ran the license plate. The vehicle came back stolen through NCIC.
The detectives followed the vehicle and waited for other 9th Mobile detectives to arrive in the area before initiating a stop The suspect vehicle pulled into the a gas station. As the detectives pulled into the parking lot, they observed what appeared to be a domestic struggle within the vehicle and a female quickly exited the passenger side as if she was in distress ,Detectives decided to initiate a traffic stop in the parking lot.
Detective Benzing drove in front of the suspect vehicle to prevent the suspect vehicle from evading the traffic stop. As Detective Gadegaard pulled in behind the suspect vehicle, he initiated his emergency equipment. When this occurred, the suspect drove forward into Detective Benzing’s police vehicle. The driver’s side of the suspect vehicle collided with the front passenger fender of Detective Benzing’s police vehicle The collision caused minor damage to the police vehicle and moderate damage to the suspect’s stolen vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene. A vehicle pursuit commenced as Sergeant Casper was in proximity of and aware of the pursuit. The case ended on foot S/B through the houses This was the last time the suspect was seen The suspect evaded capture on September 16th. The following day, 9th Mobile detectives continued the investigation and located the juvenile suspect. The juvenile suspect was arrested, charged accordingly and transported to LMYDC without further incident. At several points in time during the pursuit, the LMPD Air Unit was involved, but was unable to maintain a continuous visual on the suspect vehicle due to air traffic control light restrictions.

Note: Detective Benzing failed to activate his WVS. He completed the proper paperwork and he was verbally counseled.
