Scot Stoddard // Water God Enki Music Video

This is a music video for my new single "Enki", the first single from my coming album "Kengir".

The album is being based off of the culture of the ancient Sumerian civilization that evolved in Mesopotamia around 5,500 BC. The Sumerians were an amazing Mesopotamian culture that referred to their land as "Kengir", meaning Land of Noble Lords. Enki was their god of water, which was a crucial element in their desert environment.

The Sumerians were one of the first civilizations to develop a written language, and they did so by crafting clay tablets, then making impressions into the clay with a sharpened reed, using their cuneiform language. So keeping with the true Sumerian technique, my wife, Cat Corelli, made a clay tablet and, employing Sumerian cuneiform, wrote out the name Enki on the tablet! We shot the video of this process, which you can see here! A photo of this tablet is also used for the cover art for the single.

Now, the music! Enki is the first song I wrote when I started this new album "Kengir". It's an instrumental progressive rock/metal/electronic track, similar but yet quite different to the music from my last album, Valley Of The Kings. The stringed instrument you hear in two different sections of the track is fashioned after the artifact recovered from the Sumerian city of Ur, called the Bull Headed Lyre of Ur. There's not a lot of audio recordings of this instrument (actually, none!), so I took a shot at what it may have sounded like, after doing some research into lyres, and I created my own software instrument for this track. The lyre was heavily utilized in Sumerian music, as well as the wood flute you hear in this track, so I've combined the two to give an authentic feel to the music. Then I blended that in with the heavy prog style I enjoy so much to give you a truly unique blend of styles.
