Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1965. The band was one of the most popular and influential psychedelic rock bands of the 1960s, and their music helped to define the San Francisco Sound. The band's classic lineup consisted of Marty Balin (lead vocals), Paul Kantner (rhythm guitar, vocals), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass guitar), Grace Slick (lead vocals), and Spencer Dryden (drums). Jefferson Airplane released nine studio albums during their initial run, including the landmark albums Surrealistic Pillow (1967) and Volunteers (1969).
