This is the first video of a new series dedicated to the restoration story of AT&SF 5000. Most of the photography and videos in this series has never been made public before.
Sam D. Teague, Founder and President of the Railroad Artifact Preservation Society, was in charge of all restoration work performed on AT&SF Steam Locomotive 5000 (Madame Queen).
In this series you will be able to see parts of the Madame Queen not visible to bystanders or visitors to the locomotive. All restoration work performed was documented and recorded, either on video, or with still photography.
Follow this new series to see the restoration and preservation effort on 5000 with up close detail and information of how the work was done.

Firebox Mapping is performed to determine the integrity of the firebox metal and its ability to be able to hold the 300 PSI pressure when the locomotive is steamed up.

When Sam D. Teague, Founder and President of the Railroad Artifact Preservation Society began the cosmetic restoration of AT&SF Steam Locomotive 5000 in 2008, he discovered that only one of 5000's original Baldwin Locomotive Works Builder's Plates was still attached to the locomotive smokebox. The missing plate which was originally located on the fireman's side of the locomotive was missing.
To make sure that nothing happened to the last original builder's plate, Sam and his volunteers removed the plate from the side of the loco and stored it in a safe location so that the original could be placed in the Society's future museum.
One of the volunteers that worked with Sam on the 5000 restoration was Mr. Robb Gunter of New Mexico. Robb is a world-class blacksmith. Robb volunteered to take the original builder's plate and make two exact duplicates of the original. That way, the original could be kept in the museum and the duplicates could be displayed on the locomotive in their original locations mounted on both sides of the smokebox. If they were ever stolen or damaged, we would still have the original.
You will enjoy watching how Robb takes 5000's original builder's plate and creates two new exact copies from raw bronze.

Hear Madame Queen's Real Whistle!

The whistle on AT&SF Steam Locomotive 5000 (Madame Queen) has not been heard since the early 1950's when the locomotive was retired in 1954.
Recently found video of the whistle test has been found and included at the end of this video. You will hear the whistle blow for the first time since the retirement of the locomotive.
The whistle was tested by connecting it to a 90 psi live steam source. You will hear the whistle blow a long-short-long sequence in the test.
If it is this loud under 90 psi, imagine how loud it would be under Madame Queen's normal boiler pressure of 300 psi!

AT&SF Steam Locomotive 5000 was the most powerful steam locomotive the Santa Fe Railway had in terms of pulling ability. Her mighty power was used often as a helper to get other trains over the pass.
This video shows what it would be like if Madame Queen was restored to steam operations and used to pull a modern mixed freight train over the pass. Raton Pass is so steep that not even the Madame Queen can go it alone!

Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Steam Locomotive 4014, known as “Big Boy” is the largest and most powerful steam locomotive operating on the rails today. With an advertised tractive effort rating of 135, 375 pounds, there is no argument that it has the most tractive effort.
AT&SF 2-10-4 Steam Locomotive 5000, Known as “Madame Queen” is the mother of largest and most powerful 2-cylinder steam locomotives ever built. With an advertised tractive effort rating of 93,000 pounds, most people doubt that she is a powerful as the “Big Boy”.
Sam D. Teague, author of “The Madame Queen”, the only book covering the complete history of 5000, has done exhaustive research on which locomotive is the most powerful. He also assumed, that “Big Boy” was far ahead of Madame Queen in tonnage hauling ability.
Having access to large amounts of technical data and Dynamometer test results of 5000 and 4014, his research produced some startling results. This video provides Sam’s research path and test data that shows Big Boy has some very stiff competition.

5000 was relocated in August of 2005 through the historic 100-year-old brick streets of downtown Amarillo Texas. Sam D. Teague, Founder and President of the Railroad Artifact Preservation Society, spent 2 1/2 years planning the relocation efforts of volunteers, donors and contributors, along with city government leaders, and local contractors, ultimately, obtaining the interest of the History Channel in the project for their "Mega Movers" series.
Sam D. Teague, author of "The Madame Queen" is the foremost historian with regard to Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Steam Locomotive 5000 (Madame Queen). His research proved that 2-10-4 5000 is equal in power to the Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. Madame Queen was the mother of all Santa Fe Railway 2-10-4 Classes which railroad historian Lloyd Stagner dubbed "The Ultimate Development" of steam locomotive technology.
