MEDICAL EMERGENCY: Delta Airlines pilot incapacitated during flight. Air Traffic Communication

22 SEP 2023. A Delta Airlines Airbus A330-900, registration N422DZ performing flight DL-291 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was enroute at FL360 (36 000 feet altitude) about 440nm north of Minneapolis,MN (USA) in Canadian Airspace when one of the flight crew members became medically incapacitated and was taken to the cabin for care. The flight crew member that was on rest at the time assumed the duties of the ailing pilot, the crew declared emergency, descended to FL240 and diverted to Minneapolis for a safe landing about 75 minutes later. The Canadian TSB reported the ailing pilot was taken to hospital for examination.

“UAL1309 B38M, [name redacted] reported at time 1200Z that the pilot had a heart attack and was removed from the cockpit. First officer is flying the plane. At 1210Z, [name redacted] called back and stated the pilot had regained consciousness and returned to the cockpit. They were unaware in what capacity the captain was performing his duties, only that he returned to the cockpit. UAL1309 Landed RWY without incident at 1219Z and taxiied [sic] to gate A20 without delay. Paramedics were standing by.”

During that conversation I learned of another pilot who died suddenly during the taxi sequence on a different flight. Management at Qatar and Emirates Airlines are investigating the increase in sudden deaths and disability claims according to the individual I spoke with. Pilots for most Middle East carriers were mandated to take 3 shots.”

22 September 2023.
Delta Airlines Airbus A330 performed flight DAL291 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (LFPG) to Los Angeles (KLAX). Was cruising at FL360 over Canadian airspace, approximately 440 nautical miles north of Minneapolis, MN (USA), an onboard medical emergency arose involving one of the flight crew members.
In response to the situation, the air traffic controller's supervisor, recognizing the severity of the situation, declared an emergency on behalf of the flight crew. The incapacitated crew member was promptly taken to the passenger cabin, where a doctor, who happened to be on board, provided medical care.
