The International Space Station (ISS) orbits the Earth at an average altitude of approximately 420 kilometers (about 261 miles). It travels at an average speed of about 28,000 kilometers per hour (about 17,500 miles per hour). This incredible speed allows the ISS to circumnavigate the Earth approximately every 90 minutes, which results in around 16 orbits per day.
