“Ça y est!... J’ai fait quelques pas!...Pour la première fois sans doute dans l’histoire de l’humanité, on a marché sur la lune!”

These words, spoken by Tintin in the 1954 bandes dessinées “On a Marché sur la Lune,” offered an idea of what man might be inspired to express after landing on the moon. Translated, the quote states, “There it is! I took several steps! For the first time, without a doubt in the history of humanity, we have walked on the moon!”

Though man would not walk on the moon for another 15 years, Hergé’s choice of Tintin’s first lunar words would find an echo in the Neil Armstrong’s word choice in July of 1969. Though Hergé chose the wrong method of lunar landing (Tintin landed on the moon through the use of direct ascent, NASA eventually chose Lunar orbit rendezvous), Tintin’s trip to the moon has proved an inspiration for generations.

It was only fitting then that when Omega released a new variant of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch with a red and white “racing” minute track, that it immediately became known as the “Tintin” (It is worth noting that in all other ways, this is a stock Cal. 1861 Moonwatch, as we have all come to know and love). Though not an official collaboration between Omega and the Hergé, it is undeniable that some inspiration was taken from the red and white rocket shown in classic comics and is all the better for it.
