Last Bowhunting weekend before Wisconsin gun opener 2017

This was quite a weekend; I decided to go out in the evenings and not in the mornings, the last few years we have been alerting the deer to our presence by going hunting in the mornings. The deeper into the woods the worse it is, once they know your there they will change their routes and then you’re done. Stay shallow in the mornings on a route you know they use, but not too close to a bedding area, and always play the wind. I had seen a big buck on Wednesday afternoon at 1:45 within 22 yards but it was shortly after I was in the stand and I didn’t have the bow up to the stand yet, I rushed to get my bow up quietly but he was 30 or so yards through brush by the time I was ready. I thought about that buck all week. When I went out on Saturday, Veterans Day, I wanted to make sure I was early, at 12:40 I was there, southwest wind gusting to 13mph, 28 degrees, and snow falling from the sky. It was beautiful, I seen many bucks that afternoon but the big guy never showed, I let a young eight pointer go, he had the right antler broken off right above his head. Multiple forks, sixes, a young eight, and a few does came through, some chasing was present as the pre-rut comes to a close and the main rut is about to start. Sunday I was out at 11:40 the wind had switched to the northwest so I switched to the stand I have on the opposite side of the deer’s trail, the wind was very low maybe 2-5mph so I had to be cautious walking out slowly and quietly. I had an opossum come visit me for five minutes or so, but up until 2:30 that was all I seen. To my left was movement, it looked like a nice buck, fairly tall white rack, nice sized body, I was shaking like a leaf, I thought “this is a nice young buck, I have work to do, take what’s in front of you rather than waiting”. So that’s what I did. Have a great and safe hunting season everybody!
