It is a medium-sized owl with a total length from 38 to 43 cm and a weight from 425 to 620 g. It is distinguished by very long tufts of white or yellowish-brown ears and a protruding whitish stripe on the eyes, turning into tufts of ears. The color varies from yellow to brown with red spots.

Like most owls, this species is strictly nocturnal. They usually spend the night with their mate during the day in dense bushes, along tree-planted streams or rivers.
