#Israel #War In the 1990s, Israel promised the Palestinians the Gaza Strip because

the Palestinians asked for it in the Oslo peace process,
Egypt had refused to take it back with the Sinai in 1979,
Gaza had a very high concentration of Arabs and a very low concentration of Jews,
the (First) Intifada was awful for everyone and Israel didn’t want another, and
trading land for peace had worked with the Egyptians.
So the theory was that even though the Palestinians had turned down a state in the late 1940s, now they were ready for it and with their own state to govern, peace would ensue. And it’s not like the status quo was great for Israel! And since a sort of similar arrangement had worked with Egypt, maybe this one could too
