Gene Cernan, also known as Eugene Cernan, was an American astronaut and naval aviator who made significant contributions to the United States' space program. He is best known as the last astronaut to have walked on the moon during the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972. Cernan was the commander of the Apollo 17 mission, which was the final manned lunar landing mission of NASA's Apollo program.
