On May 14, 1948, the State of Israel announced its independence. For many, this was a long-time dream come true: "Eretz Israel" - a home for all Jewish people and for survivors of the Holocaust. Palestinians call this period the "catastrophe.”

The State of Israel was founded 75 years ago. The effects can still be felt today in the ongoing Middle East conflict. What are the historical roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? This documentary sheds light on the decisive years from 1897 to 1948. Israeli and Palestinian historians and experts share their reflections and contextualize the global political events of those years.

The pivotal turning point came in November 1947 with the United Nations plan to partition British Mandatory Palestine. For some, it was a dream turned reality - an independent state offering Jews protection, refuge, and a homeland. For others, it marked the beginning of a "catastrophe,” what Palestinians call the "Nakba,” defined by the loss of homeland, displacement, and uncertainty. More than 75 years after the historic UN vote, the conflict between Israel and the now occupied Palestinian territories continues. It is a source of unresolved tension in the region with reverberations in and beyond the Middle East.

My dearest friend at work was a Palestinian Arab (Christian) who was born in a village in the Galilee. Their home was visited one night by a Jewish paramilitary group (Stern Gang, I believe) in 1948 and were told they should leave or they would be killed. They left for Lebanon, and later he came to the U-S as a young exchange student. He became a professor and journalist, with many Jewish friends, including me. He would read the Jerusalem Post and Ha'Eretz as well as Arab newspapers. One day I asked him how he could bear no hatred. He told me everyone had suffered, too many had died, and then said, "I have only one life to live, and I will not be consumed by this madness." That was more than 30 years ago, and I can still hear those words and will till the day I die.

As a Indian I see two things British dividing country is still a unsolved problem .. and makes me sad how one country is responsible for such disasters and then yet champion the human rights today..

I have watched quite a few documentaries about Palestinian and Israel's history of conflict. And I could say this particular documentary is by far gives me the most understanding on how the conflict evolves. Thank you DW.

An entire documentary series could be made about the duplicity of the British, not only in Palestine, but in many other parts of the world.

A good documentary that helps us realise how tragedies beget other tragedies. We recognise some, disregard others, and sometimes we unknowingly realise new ones thinking we are overcoming past ones...

This is a history lesson I was never taught. Thank you for this very informative video. I never really understood what the conflict was really about. Only that one side was the good guys and the other was the bad guys.

Great DW documentary. The rest is up to us as audiences to determine whose rights were violated, who the opressor is/was and what type of response is/was acceptable by the Palestinians and still holds because this is still an ongoing conflict. It's a matter of morals and being fair no matter what the circumstances are and who is involved. No reasonable human would split their home with a stranger let alone the sacredness of the land to Arabs (of all religions in that region). This documentary shows that this is not a Muslim vs Jewish conflict, it is Zionist vs Arab of all religions conflict. The fact that they were open to choose Argentina or Uganda is actually ridiculous. Yeah, let's pick somebody's land and make it ours. Today's version of this story is Russia vs Ukraine and nobody would think twice before condemning Russia's actions. But when Muslims are part of any conflict, they immediately become the terrorists and everybody else is the victim.

No one should be without a country. Having said that, no one should also invade other boundaries just because they ‘think’ that land belongs to them.

40:28 Respect to this lady and her parents. I think most people would be similarly repulsed by the idea of being presented a land at expense of another group of people and their grave, torture, and suffering.
