Training For Swimmers: Closed Chain or Open Chain?

We were talking about the other day how a lot of swimmers we see train in open chain with exercises like a lat pull down or cable pulls, where you’re pulling the bar towards you.

But this doesn’t carry over as swimming is a closed chain exercise. You’re not pulling the water towards you, you are pulling yourself through the water. Just like pulling yourself above the bar in a chin up. However the lower body is in open chain as you are kicking to propel your body through the water.

If you’re a swimmer, closed chain upper body exercises and lower body open chain exercises are going to have the best carry over to your sport. As well as if your sport requires paddling like surfing!
