When the striking Bengals gathered for their first workout,, the first thing Boomer Esiason did was line up the offense with James Brooks at tailback in an obvious jab at coach Sam Wyche. Brooks took a direct snap and retreated to the end zone for a safety. In Week 2, leading the 49ers 26-20, Wyche called a fourth-down sweep that failed to run out the last six seconds on the clock. With two seconds left, Joe Montana threw a winning TD pass to Jerry Rice.
