Episode 73
We are rescuing another Belgian Draft Horse from shipping to slaughter! We need your help to save this sweet girl! One of our subscribers reached out to me on Facebook and sent me a post from Southern Wisconsin Second Chance Lot of a Belgian Draft Horse that was listed on their page for about a week. No one had rescued her and there was a chance she would be shipping to slaughter any day. When I talked to Cory and the board we decided to rescue her. Only problem is she is in Columbus, Wisconsin and that is 1100 miles from Amarillo, Texas one way.

As soon as we secured her bail, with the help of our subscriber, I started calling transport companies. However, the cost of transport was outrageous and they wouldn't be available for a few weeks to pick her up. Cory agreed to drive our truck and trailer to go pick her up to save on the cost of transport but we need your help to save this girl. We are doing an emergency fundraiser to cover the cost of boarding for a few days till we can get her, transport, vet bills, farrier service and dental.

After a horrible week of losing Finn to colic we were not expecting to have a $6500 vet bill. We need your support to keep saving these precious horses from shipping to slaughter. We are excited to get the new girl back to Texas so she can enjoy a life of retirement after all her years of hard work on an Amish farm.

WE are also excited to announce that the Big Hoof Foundations website is finally completed! Check out our new site at bighooffoundation.org

The one item WE always need is FEED! If you would like to send a gift/donation of feed (Alfa Pro, hay, etc) you can send that through our local feed store, HF & C Amarillo. HF&C Amarillo has offered to help us with anyone wanting to send a gift/donation of Alfa-Pro to the horses. When you call, tell them you are sending a gift to Fletcher Farms Amarillo/Big Hoof Foundation and they will add the gifts to our account.

Alfa-Pro is a complete pelleted alfalfa mixed with vitamins and minerals all the horses need on a daily basis. Alfa-Pro is $17.45 per bag. They do offer a discount if you purchase by the pallet (40 - 50 pound bags) $16.95 per bag if purchased by the pallet. WE go through about 5-1/2 bags per day to feed all 15 horses (270 pounds per day). We also purchase square bales of coastal hay from HF&C. We use 4 bales per day to feed all the horses. Square bales of hay are $16.75 each.

Thank you to everyone that has sent us gifts of Alfa Pro! The horses love Alfa Pro and we truly appreciate the bags/pallets you have sent to us!
