Being a veteran isn’t an easy life, but with a bit of help from a caring community, it can be made a bit easier. You never truly stop being a soldier, the things you’ve seen and the things you’ve experienced are forever ingrained in your memory.

In the United States alone, there are millions of veterans, most of which come from Florida, Texas and California and nearly 10 million of them are aged 65 or older. The problem with war veterans is that a great part of them ends on the streets once they’ve returned from the battlefield. They take up 12 percent of the adult homeless population and those numbers are terrifying.

But this doesn’t have to be their fate. Community outreach can help these people in overcoming the shock and feeling like a part of a community again and this is exactly what happened to Ron Hyde.

This war veteran was undergoing chemotherapy and was living in an empty apartment. He decided to stop his therapy and buy a comfortable chair to sit in. Since he didn’t have a way to bring it back home, a woman from his community posted on Facebook that a vet needed help. Sure enough people gathered furniture and food and equipped Ron’s apartment. He couldn’t believe any of this was happening to him, but he was extremely grateful. And that ladies and gentlemen is what they mean when they say that a little act of kindness goes a long way.
