Background, research, and clinical applications

Dr. Koenig will explore the historical relationship between religion and medicine, examining the origins of indigent health care, hospitals, medicine and nursing. He will explore the research that has examined the relationship between religious involvement and mental health, with a focus on meaning and purpose. He will propose a model of how religion may impact physical health through the mind-body mechanisms. He will examine the relationships between religious activity and physical health, immune functioning, cardiovascular functioning, and survival. He will examine what these findings mean for clinicians and how this might be applied to clinical practice in a sensitive and appropriate manner. He will discuss that the relationship between religion and medicine means for the future of health care in the United States, particularly the growing aging population and their health care needs (discussing possible linkages between health care systems and religious communities, through parish nursing, etc.). Finally, he will discuss how spiritually-inspired meaning and purpose are vital for maintaining the health not only of the healthy, but of the sick as well.

Educational Objectives:
1) Examine the historical relationship between religion and medicine.
2) Explore research on the relationship between religious involvement and mental and physical health.
3) Gain an understanding of how these findings can be applied to clinical practice.
4) Explore how spiritually-inspired meaning and purpose are vital for maintaining the health of the healthy and the sick.
