Mass Strandings
Every year, hundreds or even thousands of marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins, and seals, strand themselves on beaches around the world. Scientists are not sure why this happens, but there are a number of theories.
One theory is that mass strandings are caused by geomagnetic disturbances. Geomagnetic disturbances are changes in the Earth's magnetic field. They can be caused by solar storms or other natural phenomena.
Another theory is that mass strandings are caused by toxins in the water. Toxins can come from pollution, algal blooms, or other sources.
Still another theory is that mass strandings are caused by social factors. For example, if one animal in a pod gets sick or injured, the other animals may follow it onto the shore.
Scientists are still trying to understand why mass strandings happen. It is likely that a combination of factors is involved.
