In remote Cornwall, on the south coast of England, in 1819, a gang of bloodthirsty marauders causes shipwrecks to keep their cargo, murdering all the surviving crew members. The leader is the owner of the inn "Jamaica Inn" (which exists and is currently a pub, located on Bodmin Moor), the brutal Joss Merlyn. His niece, Mary Yellen, arrives to live there after being orphaned and ends up discovering her uncle's crimes when she saves one of the gang members, James Trehearne, from being hanged. As they flee the inn, she seeks help from friendly neighbor Justice of the Peace Sir Humphrey Pengallan, unaware that the man is hiding a secret that will threaten her life.
📚 The film is adapted from Daphne du Maurier's 1936 novel of the same name. It is the first of three works by du Maurier that Hitchcock adapted (the others were his novel Rebecca and the short story "The Birds"). It stars Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara in her first major film role. It is the last film Hitchcock made in the United Kingdom before moving to the United States.
