Body camera footage shows the moment a West Michigan kayaker was saved by a good Samaritan and a police Trooper, Michigan State Police in Northern Michigan say.

Troopers at the Traverse City Post first heard of a distressed kayaker in the water around 1:50 p.m. Saturday. The 911 call said the kayaker was in Long Lake in Long Lake Township.

The air temperature was 47 degrees, with the water at 53 degrees.

Trooper Park arrived on the beach first and enlisted the help of a boater who was at the shoreline.

They approached the kayaker, who was in the water holding onto his kayak. Police say he was shivering and had begun to lose his fine motor skills.

Trooper Park and the boater hoisted a 37-year-old man from West Olive into the boat safely.

He told the trooper he had been in the water for about an hour.

The Long Lake Fire Department arrived with a boat shortly after.
